With the widespread use of Diesel Multiple Units replacing the more traditional loco and stock on most services around the country, it is getting harder to photograph regular loco hauled trains. One exception is the use of various traction on the Cardiff Foot-Ex and Rug-Ex specials and the continued use use of 37's on the Cardiff to Fishguard service.

37419 takes a turn on the return Fishguard to Rhymney service seen having just passed Miskin. This service reverts to daily operation rather than Saturdays only from the summer timetable. The longer journey provides more opportunity for the 37's to stretch their legs rather than the more usual potter up the valleys. 37419 has since been stored and now stands awaiting a reprieve at Margam 4Read More

Repainted into its original XP64 colours by Virgin for its last days as a Cross Country machine, 47853 became quite a celebrity. It has now passed into Freightliners hands and in what could almost be a time warp back to its last Virgin workings its seen passing Coed Kernew with a rake of ex-virgin stock on its way to Cardiff for a Rugby game.

67029 enjoyed a day out with 67006 providing a shuttle service between Cardiff and Newport before the Play Off finals at the Millennium stadium in May. Used mainly in top and tail mode the GM's proved a big hit with the operators and look like being the future for this type of special.

The recent conversion of First Great Westerns class 47's into class 57's has seen the original "body snatcher" 57601 snapped up by the West Coast Railway Company. Thankfully it has lost its garish purple Porterbrook livery in favour of far more pleasing and traditional colours.

Here 37197, 37038 and 47840 are seen on a special working forced on the railways by the lack of spare capacity on a system dominated by multiple units. The trio head past Coed-Kernew on their way to Cardiff Central for a late date with a rugby match.
